FG targets 4,000MW from nuclear energy

Olalekan Adetayo,
The Federal Government is working towards generating 4,000 megawatts of electricity from nuclear energy.
The plan is to start a programme in the coming years that will give the country 1,000MW in the first instance, which will be increased to 4,000MW thereafter.
According to a statement on Wednesday by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, this was disclosed during a meeting that President Muhammadu Buhari had with the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mr. Yukiya Amano, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Shehu said the ministers who spoke at the meeting gave updates on the country’s presentation for the utilisation of nuclear energy.
The SSA said in the statement, “The ministers of Power, Solid Minerals, Health, Science and Technology, who briefed the meeting, said preparatory steps taken so far included the training of doctors and other medical specialists to prepare for unforeseen circumstances, the establishment of specialist medical centres and the procurement of necessary equipment aimed at protecting the health of the citizens.
“Nigeria, said the ministers, is aspiring to start a programme in the coming years that will give this country 1,000MW of electricity in the first instance, to be increased to 4,000MW thereafter.”
He quoted the President as welcoming the support of the IAEA for Nigeria’s aspiration to generate electricity from nuclear energy.
Buhari said he was happy that the organisation was developing a programme from which Nigeria would benefit.
He urged the IAEA to do more to support Nigeria in view of the long years of its association and support for the nuclear regulatory agency.

APC Leaders Under Gun Attack in Rivers…See Shocking Details

Rivers state seems to be the new hub of crime and violence as some APC leaders of the party were attacked by assailants in the South-south state.
National and Rivers State leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), top politicians and reporters yesterday came under gun attack from suspected thugs of the Peoples Democratic Party in a near ambush in Rivers State. But the heavy presence of security forced the assailants to take to their heels. The attack came between Omoku, the headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers state and Big Elele, on the way to the Port Harcourt International Airport Road.
Rivers State PDP Chairman Felix Obuah, hails from the local government. The National leaders of the APC, lead by Deputy National Chairman (South) Chief Segun Oni, who represented National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, and state leaders led by the deputy governorship candidate during the April 11 last year’s election, Asita Honourable, were in Omoku to sympathise with the victims of the politically-motivated killings and beheadings. Most of them are members of the APC.
With Oni from Abuja were the National Women Leader Ramatu Tijani and National Youth Leader Ibrahim Jalo, among others.
The sympathy meeting took place at the APC’s local government secretariat in Omoku, a town now deserted for fear of attacks ahead of Saturday’s run off elections.
The trip started from the party’s state secretariat in Port Harcourt, around 8 a.m when party leaders, headed for the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, to receive the visitors from where they all moved to Omoku.
Travelling to Omoku in a long convoy, the normal speed of about 100 kilometres per hour was observed, but the return journey witnessed a snail speed of 20 kilometres per hour.
While at Omoku, the APC leaders got information from undisclosed persons that suspected PDP thugs had laid ambush on the route they took to Omoku, to attack them. They were told to consider taking another route to Port Harcourt.
The APC deputy national chairman, however, called the bluff of the rampaging gunmen and insisted that the return journey must be through the same route (Big Elele to Port Harcourt International Airport). Security was immediately beefed up.
Rather than speeding during the return journey, the convoy drivers opted for slow movement, with many fully-armed and battle-ready soldiers, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and riot policemen on hand to protect the convoy
But the assailants remained in the bush from where they were shooting sporadically. They could not move to the busy highway, and instead ran into the bush.

APC Candidates in Abuja Remove President Buhari’s Picture from Campaign Posters (Photo)

Following the downturn of economic and business activities in the country which is fast making Buhari unpopular with Nigerians, the APC candidates have reportedly removed the president’s pictures from their campaign posters.
Ahead of the March 19 area council poll in the Federal Capital Territory, candidates of the All Progressives Congress, APC, have removed the picture of President Muhammadu Buhari from their campaign posters.
Prior to now, most of the candidates featured the picture of the president as a means to boost their electoral fortunes.
However, a correspondent observed that in AMAC, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Bwari, the posters bearing the pictures of the president have all being replaced by fresh ones without him featuring.
Efforts to speak to party officials of the APC in the FCT was met with a brick wall as none of them was prepared to offer any explanation for the sudden change.

Some residents argued that the dire situation of things could be reason why the APC candidates decided to take the ‘safer route’ of not featuring the president as it could serve as reminder of failed promises.
Speaking on the issue, Ismaila Bala, a businessman and resident of Gwagwa, said; “which politician will want to associate with somebody you want to vote for and you are crying about his style of governance? Voting is done mostly at the grassroots and that is where this economic hardship is biting more.
“A mudu of rice that was sold for N250 is now N450, and that is how it is with other commodities almost 100 percent increase, meanwhile there is no money in circulation to buy the items. So I think they are being wise to have removed his picture from their posters, because people are hungry.”

Amaechi, Wike, Fresh Showdown: A Contest Marked With Blood

Rivers state is on the march again as the re-run election approaches with former governor Rotimi Amaechi on ground to compete with Wike, the current governor in mobilizing supporters.
Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi
The upcoming Rivers state election will be a show of political might and test of their strength. Minister of Transport, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi who came into Rivers State this weekend said he was on ground to mobilise his All Progressive Congress, APC members for the election.
On the streets of Port Harcourt, the perception has been that the election will be a clash of “federal” and “local” might. Governor Nyesom Wike is also actively on the field canvassing for votes for his party members in order to cement his stand as the governor of the state.
Amaechi in a monitored radio programme in Port Harcourt promised that the state will be flooded with heavy presence of soldiers to forestall rigging. Already soldiers have been conducting mop up operations in several communities in the state ahead of the exercise.
Some of the security operations have been greeted with mixed reception. While the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has largely condemned the security operations, the APC in the state has welcomed it with much enthusiasm.
In Buguma, the Council of chiefs in advertorials condemned the recent invasion of the community by heavilly armed security operatives, saying the invasion was orchestrated by a member of one of the political parties. Ahead of the elections some communities in the state have recorded bizarre killings. Preliminary investigations by the Police said some of the killings were cult related but some persons think they could also be fall out of party differences in the communities.
In Buguma, headquaters of Asari Toru local government area two mindless murders were recorded within a space of 24 hours. The first was the murder of Ofinjite Amachree, a member of the All Progressive Congress, APC on Tuesday last week. His assailants after killing him allegedly set his corpse ablaze. Governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Dr Dakuku Peterside and his party in separate statements condemned the brutal murder.
Surprisingly what looked like a reprisal killing occurred in the community the following day. In a similar manner, a youth, Godstime Ifuroiyala was shot dead and his remains set ablaze. His killers allegedly dumped the corpse in the river.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Muhammad said two persons were arrested separately for the two different murders.
In Omoku headquarters of Ogba Egbema Ndoni local government area there have also been killings. A former lawmaker in the fifth House of Assembly and member of the APC, Hon Monday Eleanya from the community was shot dead in Port Harcourt on February 11. This was followed by the murder of about 17 persons in Omoku the following day. With some of the heads of those killed beheaded. The Police said it could confirm death of 12 persons in the incident.
Assailants struck again in Omoku on March 5, this time they murdered the Ward 4 Chairman of APC, Mr Frankline Obi, his wife and their 18 years old son.
While some like Governor Wike believe the killings in Omoku had little or nothing to do with politics as he blamed cultists for the attack, there are those who think they could also have elements of politics.

Elements of politics
Ahoada East and Abua local government areas have also had their share of the killings. On January 21 this year about 11 persons were murdered by unknown gunmen in Ula Upata community, Ahoada East local government area.
As the rerun elections come up on Saturday the prayer of many is that it should be peaceful.
While Wike largely needs victory for the PDP to get the stronghold in the House of Assembly his predecessor, Amaechi needs victory for his APC to prove that he is firmly on ground in the politics of the state and give his party visibility in the state and also prove that the victory of the PDP in the last election was largely a fluke.
Up for graps:
3 Senate seats
11 House of Reps Seats
22 House of Assembly seats

Tiwa Savage Says That Africa Doesn’t Talk About Sex Enough

news
Last Updated: 1 day ago
Tiwa Savage appeared on ‘The Voice UK’ where she spoke about balancing her works as a wife ,mother and musician. She completed her album while pregnant and kicked off her promotional campaign within months of giving birth, showing her strong she is.
“I want to debunk that myth – and it’s not just for me,” Savage says with conviction. “Whether you’re a doctor, a nurse, a politician, anything, once you’re married and have kids, there are people who will say you can’t be an entrepreneur, a business mogul or still be at the top of your game.
“I’m going to work my butt off to encourage other women. I want them to know that it is not the end; it’s just the beginning. We’re built for this, women are much stronger than we give ourselves credit for.”
“[As an R&B singer] I would have been one of millions,” she says. “TJ advised me to go back home [to Nigeria.] He told me: ‘There’s a void with the female artists, this is something you could really take advantage of and you can do something amazing.’ That was basically the start of the move back to Nigeria.”
“As an artist, a celebrity, you are literally living in a glass bowl, so everything about your life is scrutinised,” said Savage on being in the public eye.”
She is among the National Ambassadors of Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative’s (NURHI) ‘Get It Together’ family planning campaign, where she spoke about sex
“Sex is real,” she says. “We are all sexual beings and I think in Africa we don’t talk about it enough, and because of that, a lot of people are making a lot of mistakes. A lot of young people don’t know what is available. They’ve had it drummed into their heads ‘just don’t have sex’ and that’s not realistic anymore.
“We know that they’re going to have sex, but we can ensure that they have safe sex. That’s what I am always trying to get people to talk about – to know their options and, where we can, to empower people if they want to say ‘no, its not time, I’m not ready’. People can be strong enough to say that.”

He berated Buhari for keeping mute over the last Saturday’s attack on former Senate President, David Mark.
Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has again criticised President Muhammadu Buhari’s foreign relations, stating that he has abandoned governance.
Fayose queried the President’s condemnation of Sunday’s terrorist attack on the Grand Bassam Resort in Cote D’Ivoire, describing it as hypocritical and insensitive as he never made any statement about the various recent attacks in Nigeria.
The Governor stated this in a statement released on Tuesday, March 15, by his spokesman, Lere Olayinka.
“If President Buhari could afford to pick his phone and call the Ivorian president, Alassane Ouattara, immediately after the attack, Nigerians must ask the President why he kept mute for days over the Fulani herdsmen massacre of over 300 Agatu people of Benue State, the Mile 12 Lagos killings and wanton destruction of properties among others,” Fayose said.
He also berated Buhari for keeping mute over the last Saturday’s attack on former Senate President, David Mark by the Fulani herdsmen when he visited the eight communities completely destroyed by the Fulani herdsmen
He added: “From all indications, our President has abandoned governance. The only thing going on in the minds of those running the affairs of this country in Abuja is how to entrench themselves in power by crushing anyone perceived as capable of hindering them.
“That is the reason they are using the Department of State Services (DSS) to harass and intimidate us here in Ekiti, under flimsy excuses like investigation members of the State House of Assembly for alleged forgery of tax certificates when the Ekiti State Government, which issued the certificates have not complained to the DSS that its tax certificates were forged by the lawmakers.
“That is also the reason the President keeps showing his anger against Nnamdi Kanu and his Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) agitators while the same President has failed to approach the economy and insecurity, especially the Fulani herdsmen menace with the same level of anger.
“Even when their own Information Minister, Lai Mohammed has told Nigerians that the economy has gone out of the hands of the President, they keep using anti-corruption fight to persecute opposition elements both in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and their own party, All Progressives Congress (APC), forgetting that fighting corruption is not a substitute for putting food on the table of Nigerians.
“The President must therefore be made to realise that Nigerians are suffering, with price of foodstuffs skyrocketing. The economy is in comatose, Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen are killing people. President Buhari must learn to begin to cry over Nigeria’s problems first before going to other countries to cry over their problems for them.”
The President, who is currently in Equatorial Guinea, arrived the country on Monday, March 14, on a mission to further measures to protect the people and resources of the Niger Delta and Gulf of Guinea.

See How South-African Children Broke Tiwa Savage's Heart, Made Her Cry (photos)

Story by Maryjane Ezeh
news

Some motherless babies in Ghana has succeeded in melting the heart of Mavin First Lady, Tiwa Savage.

The My Darlin crooner is presently in South Africa and she visited an orphanage there today and wrote on how emotional she got seeing the beautiful children there.

The pretty mother of one shared some of the photos and wrote: "Today I visited an orphanage in Glenvista SA called "Door Of Hope" I think it is very important to try and sew a seed when I travel. I heard about this orphanage and how it started and I decided I had to go and do my little part to help.
I don't even know when I started crying uncontrollably. These babies are so so so beautiful, I can't imagine how much hardship and pain these mothers must have gone through to make such a difficult decision. I also thought of where these little ones would end up if no one adopts them. We live in a harsh world and we judge people sometimes not knowing what their background is or what they've had to endure. I fell in love with their little souls, just watched some of them sleeping with their little hearts beating. God help us all create a better world for the little innocent ones".
